Review of Semper Fi by D.H. Cameron

I received this book as an ARC for an honest review.

In this book we meet Darlene and Erik. Darlene has spent most of her high school years feeling like she is less than her stepbrother. She feels like her dad and stepmom care more about what her stepbrother does and no matter what she does good or bad she will never be good enough. One day however that isn't the feeling she has when her father calls her and lets her know that her stepbrother has been injured in Afghanistan. Darlene wants to still hate the golden child but there is a part of her that is really worried. The real question she has to answer is what happens to them all when he comes home?

Erik had a plan it was to be in the Marines until he was old and had to retire. This was not what he saw happening to himself. While on a mission one of the trucks incurs an IUD though the people in the truck are ok a second shot is fired in the general direction they are at. Erik thinks everyone made it out unscathed until he looks down and sees his leg in one spot and his foot in another. Erik has seen it happen before so he believes he will get the prosthetic, learn how to use it and be back in the field. However the military informs him that is not the case. Now Erik has to deal with life as a civilian. What is he going to do now that his plan has literally blown up? Also what does he do with the knowledge that his step-sister hates him, when all he wants is her?

This is a great story about dealing with what happens in war and how all the members in a family might deal with it. This story really shows us also that people who have gone through some addictive things though they think they have it all figured out can slip into old destructive patterns very easily. I was very impressed with how as the book goes on it really deals with many dynamics in this family and really shows us with love you can see things in a different light. I would highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I think everyone can take something away from this book.
